Mary Startzman … Berea, Madison County

Mary Startzman’s amazing backyard garden, which is divided into many smaller rooms by paths through gateways, has been a popular stop on Berea Arts Council garden tours, and visited by folks from around the world. Years ago, I was invited to climb up on the Startzmans’ roof for the bird’s-eye view, but thankfully she now has had Fred Asplen, a great carpenter who helped with reconstructing historic barns and boats, to build an adult-style treehouse with a set of stairs up to a sturdy railed deck; her treehouse roof is comprised of branches and leaves of a large silver maple at the garden’s center. It’s a very comfortable morning coffee view of the colorful gardens and cruising koi.
